| Challenge No. 3 What is the maximum number of units that can occur in a DR illegal/restricted position? We have some pretty amazing improvements but in every design so far, there is at least one compromise along the way: (1) promotion: visible subpromotion on the board (e.g. 2 bishops for the same diocese). (2) deadwood: units in a position who play no active role apart from staying out of trouble and contributing to the general total. We wouldn't accept them in a normal problem; its a point of theological debate whether they should they be allowed in a Max Unit problem. Definition of such a unit. If they were removed, the problem statement would still remain correct, with all lines present. (3) checking: in principle it would be nice to have a solution with no check. That may simply not be possible with 32 units. Current best solutions that we have are: DR illegal: 32 checking, no single unit is deadwood RPS (#056) DR illegal: 32 checking deadwood RPS (#050) DR restricted: 32 checking AGB (#051) DR restricted: 31 subpromotion deadwood AGB (#049) DR restricted: 30 subpromotion AGB (#049) DR illegal: 26 deadwood NDE (#048) |
